Purposes

  • To affirm purity in heaven, earth, and the inner and outer person
  • To purify the six roots
  • To ask the countless kami to hear the prayer

Deities and subjects

The seven and nine luminaries and twenty-eight lunar mansions
Are invoked as astral powers within the purity of heaven
The thirty-six kami and Sanbo Kojin
Appear as guardians associated with inner, outer, and six-root purity
The countless kami
Are asked to attend and hear the prayer

Background

Related formulas appear in early-modern Ise pilgrimage confraternity materials. The prayer layers astral, Buddhist, and popular devotional language onto Shinto purification, moving from heaven toward body and mind.

Flow of the text

Across 6 sections, the text moves from “Four forms of purity” to “Address to the countless kami.”

What to know before reading

  • After four declarations of purity, the prayer proceeds through heaven, earth, inner and outer realms, and the six roots.

  • The six roots are the Buddhist faculties of eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind.

  • Astral names and Sanbo Kojin reveal a syncretic religious lineage.
