Includes interpretation
Before Mizuha no Me no Kami, Mii no Kami, and Oshikumone no Kami, whose names are spoken with reverence, these words are humbly declared.
The grouping of the three kami follows the displayed Meiji-period text. The kami invoked in a well rite may differ by place and tradition.
Includes interpretation
Guard the water of this living well with abundant care. Morning and evening, without interruption, its heavenly water is drawn up; in gratitude, may it continue to receive the enduring life and blessing of the long well held by the heavenly rock.
The syntax of Ame no oshiha no nagawi mizu no mikoto uke tamahi is not fully transparent. This rendering conservatively understands it as the enduring life or blessing of well water.
Ritual offerings, sacred sake, food, fresh products of the sea, and fruits of the season are set out. May they be received in peace.
Includes interpretation
Through countless generations, let the water never fail and never run dry. Grant ever more abundantly the sweet and clear water of the spring, and purify and cleanse every transgression and impurity arising within or outside this home.
The displayed source ends with this petition and does not include the usual closing formula, so none has been supplied. This prayer is not a substitute for testing, sanitation, or maintenance of well water.
