Before Tsumiha Yae Kotoshironushi no Mikoto, whose name is spoken with reverence, I humbly declare: when the kami asked whether Toyoashihara no Mizuho no Kuni should be placed under the Sovereign Grandchild, the great kami was at Cape Miho in Izumo, delighting in hunting birds and taking fish. He answered that the land should be offered to the Sovereign Grandchild, raised a many-layered fence of green brush upon the sea, stepped upon the prow of his boat, and withdrew.

The prayer interprets this withdrawal as a model of devotion to one’s parent and loyal service, a far-reaching virtue transmitted through the generations. It says that people of every rank have therefore enshrined the kami upon household altars. On the twentieth day of the tenth month, merchant households celebrate an Ebisu festival, praying that people avoid wrongdoing, govern the household with a bright, pure, upright heart, remain diligent in their work, and flourish in peace through generations without end.
