By the authority of the ancestral kami who dwell in Takamanohara, the Sovereign Grandchild was entrusted with the peaceful rule of Toyoashihara no Mizuho no Kuni. With the solemn heavenly words bestowed at that time, this declaration is made.

Izanaki no Mikoto and Izanami no Mikoto became husband and wife and gave birth to the many lands and the countless kami. When Izanami gave birth to Homusubi no Kami as her beloved last child, she was burned and withdrew from sight. For seven days and seven nights, she told Izanaki not to look upon her.

The expression translated as “withdrew from sight” can indicate death, but this rendering does not reduce the source’s mythic language to a single doctrine of death or the afterlife.

Before the seven days had passed, Izanaki found her concealment strange and looked. Izanami said that he had broken her request not to see her. They then divided their realms: Izanaki was to govern the upper land and Izanami the lower land, and she went on to Yomotsuhirasaka.

Concerned that she had left a dangerous child in the upper land, Izanami brought forth four means: the water kami, a gourd, river greens, and Haniyamahime. She taught that when the fire child’s heart grew unruly, it should be calmed with water, the gourd, Haniyamahime as the power of earth, and river greens.
