TranslationThe divine council and the first envoy
The ancestral kami assembled the countless kami in Takamanohara and took counsel. To establish Toyoashihara no Mizuho no Kuni as a peaceful realm for the Sovereign Grandchild, they considered which kami should first be sent to quiet its turbulent powers. The assembled kami proposed Ame no Hohi no Mikoto.
Includes interpretation
Ame no Hohi no Mikoto was sent down but made no report. Takemikuma no Mikoto likewise followed his father and did not report, and Ame no Wakahiko also failed to return word and died through the calamity associated with the heavenly bird.
Editorial note
The wording concerning the heavenly bird belongs to the myth of Ame no Wakahiko’s death; its details vary among textual traditions.
The heavenly kami took counsel again and sent down Futsunushi no Mikoto and Takemikazuchi no Mikoto. They drove back and reconciled the turbulent kami, silenced even the speaking rocks, trees, and leaves of grass, and brought down the Sovereign Grandchild.
After the realm had been ordered and the palace raised for peaceful rule, the kami dwelling within the Sovereign Grandchild’s heavenly residence are addressed. They are asked not to rage, to be restored through Kamunaobi and Ōnaobi, and to depart for a broad and pure place among mountains and rivers, taking it as their own domain.
Includes interpretation
Cloths, mirror, jewels, bow and arrows, sword, horse, jars filled with sacred sake, rice in grain and ear, animals of mountain and plain, sweet and pungent plants, fish and seaweeds from offshore and shore are arrayed like a mountain. May the kami receive these abundant offerings in peace, cause no affliction, move to a broad and pure place among mountains and rivers, and remain there quietly enshrined.
