By the authority of the ancestral kami dwelling in Takamanohara, we praise the five great and beneficent kami who are enshrined as the spirits of the five grains in Toyoashihara no Mizuho no Kuni: Ukanomitama no Mikoto, Ōnamuchi no Mikoto, Ōta no Mikoto, Ōmiyahime no Mikoto, and Ukemochi no Mikoto.
Editorial note
The five kami named in the 1908 source differ from the five deities currently identified by Fushimi Inari Taisha. This edition preserves its distinct textual lineage.
As ancestral kami of the five grains, you spread seed widely from heaven, bring forth heavy rice ears through every generation, nourish the Emperor and the people of this world, and sustain the continuing birth of descendants. We honor you with words of purification.
Includes interpretation
Through the turning of the seasons from spring to autumn, the free passage of wind that brings brightness and peace to the home, and the light that leads the autumn harvest are all praised as the workings of the Five Inari Myōjin.
When these words are respectfully declared, every kind of grain is brought to fruition, and what is sincerely prayed for is protected and blessed. The text closes with “Mujō reihō, Shintō kaji.”
Editorial note
This describes the language of fulfillment and blessing found in the historical text; it is not a guarantee of harvest, wishes, or religious effects.
