TranslationLand-making and divine names

Includes interpretation

Before Ōkuninushi no Kami, whose name is spoken with reverence, I humbly declare: when the land was still wild and even rocks, roots, trees, and grasses were fierce, you ordered and formed the realm. For that work this prayer praises you as Kunitsukuri Ōnamuchi no Kami. For your strength in subduing hostile powers and the speaking trees and grasses, it praises you as Ashihara no Shikoo and Yachihoko no Kami. For bringing unruly kami into accord and sustaining the land, it praises you as Ōkuninushi no Kami.

Editorial note

The relationships among these names differ across sources. This translation reports the sequence used by the 1891 prayer rather than asserting one exclusive genealogy.
