Flow of the text

Across 3 sections, the text moves from “Words of purification” to “Words of celebration.”

What to know before reading

  • The three phrases are recited in order as purification, invocation, and congratulation.

  • Totsu Kami can be understood in several ways, including kami of the distant divine age or ancestral kami.

  • Because the close is a historical congratulatory formula, each phrase should be read according to its distinct function.
